Chilli Mushroom

A finger licking, super yummy mushroom recipe.

Today, we are going to make one of the popular lip-smacking Indo-Chinese dishes I.e. Chilli Mushroom. You can make it either dry, semi gravy or gravy according to your choice. Dry Chilly mushroom can be served as a starter whereas gravy one you can enjoy with some chapatti or rice items.

Preparation Time: - 15 min

Cooking Time: 15-20 min

Ingredients (For two full plate serving)

  • 300gm button mushroom

  • 2 medium size chopped onion

  • ½ chopped capsicum (bell pepper) from each (green, red, Yellow). If red & yellow is not available you can add only green bell pepper and adjust the quantity accordingly.

  • 1/4th teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic

  • 2 pieces chopped green chilli ( Optional)

  • ½ tablespoon finely chopped ginger

  • 2 tablespoons corn flour

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon soya sauce

  • Red chili sauce

  • Tomato sauce

  • 1/4th teaspoon ( 2 pinch) black pepper powder

  • 1 hand full chopped coriander leaves

  • Refined oil for dip fry

  • Salt to taste

  • White sesame seed (dry roast) for garnishing.


Step I :

Wash the mushroom & cut it into pieces (don’t make them too small), if the mushrooms are of big size cut it into 4 pieces & if it’s small in size then make it in to two pieces. Let the mushroom dry for some time or you can dry it by using a piece of tissue or by a piece of cotton.

Step II :

Take a bowl and mix together all-purpose flour, corn flour, salt, 1/4th tea spoon soya sauce, ½ tea spoon red chilli sauce, and make a smooth batter. Don’t make it too much liquid. Add the mushroom in the bowl & mix well.

Step III :

Heat oil in a frying pan on medium flame. When the oil is hot dip fry the coated mushroom phase by phase. Remove all the excess oil from the pan & keep only 1-2 teaspoons of oil in the pan.

Step IV

Add cumin seeds & let it crackle. Add onions, green chilli, ginger, garlic and saute for one to two minute.

Then add all the bell peppers & saute it. Don’t overcook the onion and capsicum. The crunchiness should be there.

Add red chilli sauce, soya sauce, vinegar and tomato sauce and mix them well. Then add salt according to the taste.

If you want to make it dry then keep it like this or if you want to make a lite gravy you can add a fine paste of 1 teaspoon corn flour and 2-3 teaspoon water. If you have the left over batter in which you coated the mushroom, you can add that paste by adding a little water according to your desire consistency. Then add the fried mushroom & mix it well. Cook it for 1 more minute.

Now switch off the flame & garnish it with black pepper powder, roasted white sesame seeds & chopped coriander leaves. If you have chopped spring onion greens then you can add that also for garnishing.
