Kadai pitha/Black gram pan cake
A traditional Odia pan cake
Kadai pitha is a traditional Odia Pan cake which can be served as breakfast recipe or tea time snack. It is a very common food prepare in every home in Odisha. Kadai pitha prepared from a batter of soaked black gram and rice.These pan cakes prepared in small size as per single servings. You can have this with sambar/green chutny/coconut chutny or with tea only. I personally like to have this with my favorite ginger tea. Here in this pan cake I have added some onion and cumin seed, u can make this without adding anything.If you don't add anything also it will taste great. Apart from Odisha it might be prepared in other state, please let me know what you called in your local language.Will be glad to know.
Preparation Time: 3-4 hr( soaking time for black gram & rice)
Cooking Time: 5-7 min. for each pan cake
Total time: depanding on how many pan cake you are making
Black gram(skinless)-1 cup
Fenugreek seed(methi)-1/2 tsp
Salt-As per taste
Cumin seed- 1 tsp
Mustard oil for cooking/ If you don't like mustard oil, use refined oil
Soak black gram (skinless) , rice and fenugreek seed for 3 -4 hour and make batter. Do not make a very fine paste of rice. rice should be slightly coarse. Batter should not be so liquidy. It should be in flowing consistancy but not liquidy just like idli batter.
Add salt ,chopped onion ,cumin seed a pinch of hing and mix well. If you do not want to use the whole batter ,just keep that much you want to use and reamining all batter you keep in fredge. Here I have used 1 big onion and 1/2 tsp cumin seed for 4-5 ladle full of batter.
Heat a kadai on high flame and add 1/2 tbsp of oil.Slightly rotate the kadai to apply oil on sides.
Add 2 ladle of the batter.cover it. And cook it on a low flame for 2-3 minute .
Removev the cover and check .now its done from one side. Now flip it.
Now kadai pitha is cooked from both side. To check if the pitha cooked properly or not you can insert a knife or you can slightly press the spatula and check.
Now take it out from the kadai and have it with your favorite chutny,sambar or tea.
