Mutton Kasha/Kosha mangsho

A mouth-watering goat meat curry

Mutton kasha is one of my favorite dish which i love to prepare for our sunday lunch.Nothing more delicious than a plate of hot steam rice & mutton kasha.When it comes to mutton I always love home made kosha mangsho & I never like to have mutton in any resturant as i do not get the flavorfull and juicy pieces.Different people cook kosha mangsho in different way but the way my father cook is my personal favorite.He always cook excelent mutton kasha & today i am going to share with you my papa's recipe. Most of the people marinate mutton before cooking I have never seen my father to marinate mutton still the taste is super delicious,and I am also not going to marinate it.For a good mutton kasha proper pieces are very much important. It should be a combination of ribs ,legs & liver.Ribs are more tasty as compare to other part & legs are very succulent.

Preparation time: 15 min

Cooking Time: 40~45 min

Total time: 55~60 min


  • Goat meat -1/2 kg

  • Potato -1 peeled & cut in to half

  • Onion-2 medium

  • Tomato-1 medium

  • Ginger-1.5 inch

  • Garlic-6 large

  • Cumin seed-1 tsp

  • Corrieder seed-1.5 tsp

  • Clove-6

  • Green cardamom-3

  • Cinnamon-1 long for masala powder &1 small to to saute in oil

  • Black pepper-10~15

  • Dry red chilli- 2

  • Star anise/chakra phul-1/2

  • Bay leaf-1~2

  • Turmeric powder-1/2~1 tsp

  • Kashmiri red chilli powder-1/2 tsp

  • Salt to taste

  • Sugar-1/4 tsp

  • Mustard oil-3~4 tsp


Step 1

Wash & clean the mutton properly .

Step 2

Dry grind all whole spices & keep aside,here i forgot to keep cumin seed(1/2 tsp)

Step 3

In the same jar make paste of 1 onion,4 large garlic(9~10 small) &1 inch ginger.

Step 4

Slice another onion,chop tomato,1/2 inch ginger,2 large garlic

Step 5

In a pressure cooker heat mustard oil till smoking point.

When it comes to the smoking point add bay leaf,cinnamon stick & sugar.

When sugar start browning add cumin seed & let it spluter

Step 6

Than add sliced onion,choped ginger & garlic.

Saute it on low flame till onion become brown .

Step 7

Add onion,ginger,garlic paste,turmeric powder,kashmiri red chilli powder.Saute till raw smell go away & oil separates.

Step 8

Add mutton,salt & mix everything well .

Then add powdered masala & mix everything well.

Step 9

Cover the lid & cook on low flame for 10 minute. Do not close the lid complitly, just keep it on top of the cooker.

After 10 minute you can see mutton will release some water.Cook for 5 more minute .

Step 10

Now add choped tomato and again cook for 5 more minute

After 5 minute add potato & mix well.

Then add 1~1.5 cup of water,mix everything well.

Step 12

In this way cook for 20 minute. Now close the lid and pressure cook it,up to 1 whistle on high flame &10 minute on low flame.

After 10 minute switch off the flame &open the lid when cooker will release the pressure.

Now the delicious mutton kasha/kosha mangsho is ready to be served.If you wish you can add some ghee on top of it.
